The Photos on this page show some of the history of the building that once stood at 101 East Center Street in Leroy Illinois.Due to neglect, decay and finally a major collapse the building was torn down in 2008.The Crumbaugh Building was built in 1911.It had many uses over the years. It was a gas station for many years,at least thru the 2nd world war.It was converted to house an A & P Grocery store for many years(late 40s thru late 1960s)that included a Butcher shop run by Harold Peyton.I clearly remember Betty Moore worked at the A & P.After the Grocery was closed it was used as a"Bumper to Bumper" Auto parts store until it was closed for good in the early1980s.During the Late 1950s early 1960s there was a Roller Skating Rink upstairs that for some time was run by my Grandma Kate Wilson. In the photos below you will see a wooden building that stood at this address before the Crumbaugh building was built. It was a tavern but its name seems to be lost to history.Note the old "Selz Shoes" painted signs painted on the building next door have survived the years. The first photo on this page shows a brick I saved from the rubble.I personally can remember going to this A & P store when I was very little with My Grandma Fern Schwartz.
